Handstand Classes in Zürich

A handstand is the one skill that pays into everything else. It is also the one that rewards patient, structured practice more than talent, which is why we teach it as a cycle rather than a workshop.

Classes work from wherever you are: the first kick-up against a wall, the first seconds away from it, then straightening a line that has been bent for years. The work is wrists, shoulders and alignment long before it is balance, and all of it is trainable.

Unlike the rest of what we teach, a handstand is yours alone, but it is learned far faster in a room of people working on the same thing, spotting each other and noticing what you cannot see from upside down.

GOOD TO KNOW

+
No. Introduction cycles start at the wall, and a good number of people arrive never having been upside down at all.
+
Longer than anyone wants to hear, and it depends almost entirely on how often you practise between classes. The class gives you the shape to practise and the eyes to correct it. The repetition is yours.
+
Usually yes, and often the class helps. Most wrist pain in beginners comes from loading a shape the body is not ready for, which is a technique problem before it is an injury one. Tell your teacher at the start.
+
Very. Most of what makes a handstand work, stacked joints, an active shoulder and a line you can hold under load, is what makes basing and flying work too.

THE HALLS

We do not have one studio. Classes run in sports halls around the city, most often the Sporthalle Sihlfeld in Kreis 4, the Tanzdach at the Jugendkulturhaus Dynamo in Kreis 6 and the gym halls at the TBZ on Sihlquai in Kreis 5. In good weather we move outdoors to the Josefswiese. Every class page names its own hall, and that is the address to turn up at.

What the halls have in common: sprung or matted floors with crash mats, and the spotting equipment a class needs. What none of them have is showers, so plan for that.

THE SCENE

Handstands need more repetition than any class can give you, so most of the progress happens in the ten minutes a day you do on your own. Zürich has rooms that open their floor outside class hours, and in summer the Josefswiese does the job for free.
