Acroyoga for Beginners in Zürich

Nobody arrives at a first acroyoga class able to do any of it. That is what an Introduction cycle is for: a group of people who have never based or flown anybody, learning the foundations in the same room at the same pace.

A first class starts on the floor. You learn to hold a partner on your feet, to be held, and to spot the person next to you. Three jobs, each of which the class teaches you, and none of which needs strength you do not already have. Come alone and you will be paired up and swapped around all evening. Come with your partner or a friend and you can work together the whole way through. Acro with someone you trust is one of the best things about it, and learning it side by side with the person you want to keep training with is a good reason to start.

Nothing is assumed of you: no acrobatic, yoga or dance background, no flexibility, no particular fitness. What the cycle assumes is that you will turn up more than once.

GOOD TO KNOW

+
Yes. An Introduction cycle assumes exactly that. Everyone in the room is meeting the same shapes for the first time, which is a far easier place to learn than a class where you are the only newcomer.
+
No. Classes rotate partners throughout, so coming alone works and plenty of people do exactly that. If you come with your partner or a friend you are welcome to stay together the whole class, and just as welcome to swap around and feel how the same shape works with somebody else.
+
Both, in your first class and every class after it. Basing and flying teach each other: you understand what a flyer needs once you have been one, and the other way round. Nobody is assigned a role permanently.
+
Almost certainly not. A base holds a flyer on stacked bones rather than muscle, so the numbers matter much less than people expect, and in a class that rotates you will find partners of every size.
+
Most people are, at first. Foundations are taught close to the ground with a spotter whose whole job is you, and nothing is asked of you before you are ready for it.
+
Comfortable clothes you can move and be gripped in, without zips, buckles or anything scratchy. Bare feet, and no jewellery on hands or wrists. We have mats.
+
Sooner than it looks. The learning curve in acroyoga is a gentle one: the first cycle gets most people basing and flying the foundational shapes, and what comes after that is mostly repetition. That is why classes are sold as cycles rather than single sessions, and it is also the good news, because the shapes you meet early are ones you can keep practising at home with your partner between classes.

THE HALLS

We do not have one studio. Beginner cycles are most often at the Tanzdach in the Jugendkulturhaus Dynamo in Kreis 6, so that is usually the address a first class sends you to. Other cycles run at the Sporthalle Sihlfeld in Kreis 4 and the gym halls at the TBZ on Sihlquai in Kreis 5, and in good weather we move outdoors to the Josefswiese. Every class page names its own hall, and that is the address to turn up at.

What the halls have in common: sprung or matted floors with crash mats, and the spotting equipment a class needs. What none of them have is showers, so plan for that.

THE SCENE

Once you have the foundations, the city opens up. The AcroZüri Verein runs open jams through the year, there is a community Telegram chat where sessions get self-organised, and from late spring the Josefswiese fills up with acrobats most warm evenings.

None of that is a place to start, and it is worth saying plainly: a jam has no teachers, so turning up to one before you can base or fly anything is a frustrating evening. Learn the foundations in a cycle first, which is the whole point of one, and the jams are yours afterwards.
